There’s a new golf cart hitting the green, and it may set new status-symbol standards for golfers who are serious about optimizing their comfort and convenience on the course.
Danish company Garia partnered with Mercedes Benz to produce a golf cart with premium features and styling inspired by the famous German automaker’s many sports cars. While there are plenty of golf carts for sale, this one is built for drivers who lust for luxury and have a taste for the future.
A Unique Product of Social Media
In 2013, Mercedes Benz organized a Facebook contest asking fans to share their ideas for new golf cart designs. Garia co-founder Anders Lynge entered the contest and won. Garia, which is known for its successful line of luxury golf carts, soon began working with Mercedes Benz to develop the product. Only the best materials and the latest technology went into the project. The high-end golf car was eventually unveiled at the PGA Open Championship in July.
Luxurious, Practical High-Tech Features
The Mercedes Benz Style Edition Garia Golf Car lives up to its famous name. The sleek new design includes all of the basic features needed to handle various situations on the green such as headlights, windshield wipers and a windscreen heater. Its impressive advanced features include an integrated on-board touchpad that monitors several of the cart’s functions and keeps track of its current location and the layout of the golf course. Drivers can instantly determine the distance to the next hole and the current weather conditions and forecast as well as the cart’s battery level and driving speed by looking at the 10.1-inch screen. It even maintains an electronic score card.
The car can also utilize Bluetooth to stream phone calls and play music through hi-fi speakers that are built into the rear roof frame. A built-in refrigerator located beneath the bench seat keeps drinks and snacks cool, and bottle holders on the instrument panel and passenger’s side allow thirsty golfers to drink a beverage of their choice from a bottle or glass. Under the dashboard, a storage tray holds a perfectly aligned row of golf balls.
Golf Cart Utility Meets Mercedes Benz Style
Both the interior and exterior styling of Garia’s model are unlike anything seen before on a golf vehicle. One of the challenges designers faced in revolutionizing the golf cart image was the typical cart’s dimensions. Sports cars are low and flat while golf carts have a narrow, vertical profile. Garia and Mercedez Benz designers incorporated their new ideal nicely; they managed to maintain some semblance of the classic golf cart shape by softening its angles and giving it a polished sports-car makeover. Its chic, futuristic look makes other carts seem outdated.
Chrome-inlay headlamps lend a jewel-like gleam and give the cart a sleek, fluid appearance when viewed from the front. The 14-inch wheels, which are unusually large for a vehicle of its type, reinforce the sporty theme while offering increased driving versatility. Consistent with the cart’s purpose, the front grille is fashioned into an almost adorable golf ball design. Lest anyone forget it is a tribute to Mercedes Benz sports cars, a small rear spoiler that doubles as a golf bag holder makes the message clear. The cart even has a carbon-fibre diffuser at its lower end.
High-quality carbon-fibre and leather materials are used for the cart’s interior finishes. The upper portion of the instrument panel is painted, creating contrast with the leather-lined lower section. Elegant, shimmery silver-shadow metallic highlights add even more swagger to the interior, especially on the steering wheel, which is lined in sophisticated white leather and accented by a metal clasp.
Performance and Driving Quality
A small consolation to potential buyers who feel a little guilty for their indulgence is that the cart is an electric model, so it’s kinder to the environment. However, as with any electric vehicle, it’s difficult to compare its performance to something like a Mercedes Benz classic petrol-powered sports car. After all, it can only reach a top speed of 30 kph. However, it does offer respectable performance and mechanical design that maintains its status as a top-of-the-line electric vehicle. Its propulsion comes from a 14hp electric motor. To provide more flexibility, it has sport and eco driving modes, and the manufacturer claims that a six-hour charge of its lithium-ion battery covers a distance of up to 80 kilometres.
